Northwestern Computer Science faculty strike a balance between mastering core skills and leveraging generative AI in CS education.

While it might be tempting to turn to AI for creative tasks such as brainstorming, studies show that humans are better at this than bots. There are still plenty of uses for AI in the creative process, however. Rather than asking bots for answers, asking them for advice on how to approach a problem offers a more-effective way to collaborate creatively with AI, which can assist with the creative process but cannot replace it.

As students continue to use generative AI for their homework, Kellogg’s Robert Bray and Sébastien Martin found a way to enrich rather than combat the experience, creating a customized large-language model to act as a tutor for a class of MBA students.
